Choosing outfits for twins can be a challange. Don’t worry we’ve got your back!

This week at our studio we have some twins coming in for cake smash pictures and we couldn't be more excited.  So we do what we always do when we have a new client, we start doing some research. Research is one of the most important things in smash cake photography because it can take a vague idea and turn it into a killer looking first birthday set. Unlike frantically scouring the shelves at Hobby Lobby two days before the shoot, research will help you stay on trend and more importantly, stay on budget.

While doing our homework for this twin shoot we realized that a lot of you were struggling with finding a proper wardrobe for twins. So today's blog is going to highlight some of the tips and tricks that we use when picking out outfits for our twin smash cake photo sessions.

Check out our tips below and when you're ready here are some fun outfits for twins that we found while scouring the far reaches of the interweb.

Tip #1 - Choose a Smash Cake theme

This one's the most obvious of the bunch and that's why we started with it. The first thing you need to do is decide on a theme or a set of colors.   The theme can be based on a holiday, or a concept, or it could be based on a set of colors. Colors or a theme will help you narrow down your search parameters when shopping on sites like Amazon or Etsy. If you don't pick out your theme before you start shopping you will find yourself wasting hours of your time down the Online Shopping rabbit hole.

Tip #2 - styling for Twins of the same gender

The obvious  thing to do for twins would be to pick out matching outfits. I can tell you from experience that some parents absolutely hate this idea. They have already seen individual personalities in their babies and they want to respect those personalities by dressing them as Individual people. It's a good idea to always check with your parents to see if they want their children to match or not in the consultation before the shoot. Some parents think  matching outfits are absolutely adorable and if that's the case then it’s definitely the way to go.

If your clients fall into the first category then an easy thing to do is buy matching outfits but simply invert the colors. As an example if you have blue shorts and a white shirt on one twin then do white shorts and a blue shirt on the other twin. Or you can use the same pattern on each garment but make sure the garments are cut differently. Like a onesie on twin A and a shirt/pant combo on twin B. This not only respects their individual identities making your client happy, it will also make it easier for you when photographing and editing individual portraits of each child. When the children are dressed alike it is much more difficult to make sure that you have a good number of individual portraits of each child.

Tip #3 - Styling for boy and girl twins

Styling for twins of different genders is much easier than styling for same gender twins.  When twins are of the same gender we don't like to use the exact same color palette without inverting the colors. Because you're buying an outfit for a boy and a girl you can get away with matching your colors because the cuts of the outfit will be completely different for each child.  This gives you the ability to match the colors exactly while giving each child a sense of individuality.

Tip #4 -  Purchase both Cake Smash outfits from the same vendor

Thanks to the internet we now all live in a  worldwide marketplace. The upside is we now have access to styles from cultures all across the globe.  The downside is there's no globally accepted sizing chart for clothes. We've had issues at our studio where we purchased an outfit on Amazon for a boy and one for a girl that looked like they were from the same vendor. Come to find out that one outfit was made in China and the other outfit was made in the US. As you can imagine, the sizing was completely different. The large outfit from China was more like a small and had to be sent back.  If we hadn’t had time for an exchange this could have been a HUGE issue. So, do yourself a favor and make sure you're buying your twin outfits from the same vendor.

Tip #5 - Buy multiple sizes for each outfit

This tip isn't exclusive to twins but it is worth mentioning. In fact, it's worth mentioning again and again and again until you get sick of hearing it. Always buy multiple sizes of every outfit you purchase for a smash cake shoot! As I mentioned above, sizes get wonky when you shop products made in a worldwide marketplace. Do yourself a favor and buy multiple sizes of each outfit. A couple of times In the beginning of our career we would arrive on set and discover that the outfits didn't fit. It didn't take long for us to get hip to the idea that perhaps we should order each outfit in multiple sizes. For the unused outfits we simply take advantage of Amazon's generous return policy and send it back for a full refund.

Conclusion

With double the babies you get an opportunity to create double the cute. So take advantage of that opportunity by using today’s tips to pick out the right wardrobe and knock your next twin smash cake session out of the park.
