9 Tips on the Psychology of Photo Sales

We all get a little nervous when we first start selling in person. Not only is sales in general a bit nerve wracking for most of us, but now we’re selling a piece of artwork. Artwork that we’ve created, to the best of our ability, based on what the client asked for. The photography is almost a gift to our client. It’s far more personal than trying to sell someone a pair of shoes or a toaster oven.

There’s a great article on the Professional Photographer website from Jeff Kent about this. https://ppmag.com/news/9-tips-on-the-psychology-of-photo-sales
He talks about how you need to value yourself, how you need to listen and gauge your client and how you need to address your client’s concerns. Take a minute to read his in depth article about people and the social dynamics needed to be the best salesperson you can be:

The first thing to realize is that you’re already interpreting people’s moods in your daily work. When you’re photographing, you’re constantly reading and adapting. You recognize if clients are uncomfortable, how different poses or situations make them feel, how you can change the mood and get them to respond to you.
