Five More Cheap Props for Smash Cake Photographers

Once Daniel and I got rolling we just kept coming up with more and more ideas for cheap smash cake props. I think this is why we’re still in the photography business - we’re always coming up with new ideas, it keeps us from getting bored. So here’s 5 more ideas for cheap props when you are planning your next smash cake session. And, here’s the original post if you missed it: ideas for cheap and easy props.

1) Old Books

Libraries have fundraising sales on old, used & damaged books. We recommend you pick out aged looking books with vintage colored covers; greens, blues & burgundys for your smash cake sets. Think about what you could use for your Harry Potter set or something for an English Garden theme. Don’t be surprised if the library is giving them away, it happens all the time.

2) Fake a Tent

Some lightweight, light colored fabric with a couple of dowels or rods makes an awesome mock tent for background filler with some height for your next smash cake set. These work wonderfully if you are outside and need to hide something in your background too. Done beautifully here by Jennifer Prisco Photography

3) Paper Pinwheels

Paper pinwheels are a great DIY project for your smash cake prep that your kids can help you with. Buy double sided scrapbook papers in coordinating colors. You can adhere the pinwheels directly to your backdrop, hang them from the ceiling or mount them to stationary objects in your set design. Just please don’t use thumbtacks like a lot of the DIY sites suggest - sew a button on them or use glue dots. Here’s instructions on how to make paper pinwheels

4) Torn Edge Fabric Banner

Super simple, you don’t need special fabric scissors or backing or glue like you do for the pennant banner, just a 1/3 of a yard of 3-5 coordinating fabrics and 5 yards of 1” ribbon in a matching color.

5) Beaded Curtain

As far as I’m concerned one of the best things about beaded curtains is they give your smash cake set design some height. I hate taking vertical pictures that are empty on the top, and I hate designing albums for clients that only have horizontal pictures. I’m starting to sound pretty picky…hmmmmmm.

We’ve had luck finding beaded curtains at chain oddities stores nearby like Spencer’s & Hot Topic, but you can also buy beaded curtains from Amazon at a nominal cost. Beaded curtains are also another great thing to keep your eyes open for at second hand stores.

What else can you add to my list? What haven’t I thought of yet? Leave me a comment below.
