Why I Smash Cake DIY

This picture is going back aways - I was reminded of how much I love it a couple of weeks ago when we photographed her little sister - how time flies. I wanted to take a minute and talk about how DIY-ing isn't just to keep your cost down. DIY-ing keeps the creative juices flowing in your head AND keeps your smash cake sets looking unique.

Yes, this set has several items you can buy. In this picture I bought the pompoms, the necklace and the romper.  But I made the tutu, the headband and the banner. You can too.  And should. Build your own: (DIY Cake Smash Banner)

Since I created this set I've learned how to create pompoms, and to sew rompers. I would never make pompoms, unless I really really needed a specific color. There's simply too much time involved.  And not all of us have a sewing machine at home.

Tutus (this style anyway) are super simple, and the first birthday headbands I make are all interchangeable. The banners are easy and so visible I feel they are worth my time.  I don't want my smash cake sets to look like everyone else's, or to look like I crawled on Hobby Lobby's website with a credit card.  Nothing wrong with Hobby Lobby - but it does limit your originality.

Artists need to roll up their sleeves and jump into projects - and photography probably only silences one part of your brain. I feel like DIY-ing makes a different part of your soul happy. I know it does mine.
